Shou Sugi Ban

Shou Sugi Ban is a Japanese wood preservation technique that involves charring the surface of the wood with fire.  Most commonly used as cladding, our expertly charred timber not only enhances the natural beauty of the wood but also provides durability and resistance to the elements. The result is a stunning black carbon coating that protects the wood for years to come.

Discover how our unique approach to timber can elevate your home with stunning aesthetics, elegance and long-lasting performance.

The Benefits

  • Increased durability – resistant to rot, insects, and harsh weather.

  • Low maintenance – requires little upkeep, compared to untreated wood.

  • Sustainable & chemical-free – uses fire instead of synthetic treatments, creating a healthier living environment for your family.

  • Unique aesthetic – a diverse range of finishes from deep black char to textured, brushed finishes.

The Process

  • We select premium quality, bushfire rated local timbers, from your own site or small scale local plantations.

  • We mill, kiln dry and cut/mould to your unique specifications.

  • The next step involves fire! We expertly char the surface using an open flame. The surface is carefully burned until it develops a deep char.

  • We dry brush the boards to remove the excess. It becomes clean to touch.

  • A protective coating of oil is applied to enhance durability and maintain the aesthetic. Ready for installation!
